Church information

The founder of the monastery in the 11th century was the famous Grigor Magistros Pakhlavuni, who built the first church of the monastery named after St. Gregory the Illuminator (1003).This magnificent church with a large courtyard served its purpose for centuries, but sometimes, due to hostile attacks and sometimes due to natural disasters, it was partially damaged but rebuilt by godly princes.
Years later, Grigor Magistros built another church, Surb Nshan, and at the beginning of the 13th century, a prince named Vasak built a third church, Surb Astvatsatsin.
Three churches are lined up and the fourth is about 120 meters away. There were also two chapels, which have not survived.
The Kecharis Monastery had its school, known back in the 13th century. During its heyday, the monastery numbered more than 500 monastic disciples.
Great scientists and politicians of that time lived in Kecharis, Grigor Magistros, Vasak Khakhbakyan, poet Khachatur Kecharetsi, and others.
Kecharis was the center of calligraphy, and we have several dozen copies of Armenian manuscripts.
In the 18th century, the Kecharis monastery was abandoned and forgotten. The monastery was built in 1988. suffered from a devastating earthquake, and only in 1998-2001 Kecharis Monastery is fully restored.
Tsaghkadzor is one of the most famous resorts in Armenia, thanks to the cool weather and beautiful nature, many tourists come here in summer, and in winter it is a favorite place for skiers.
